Smart #1 | First Look

The all-electric Smart #1 represents a new milestone for the iconic brand. Smart, known for its compact city cars, has partnered with Chinese automaker Geely to reinvent itself as an electric car specialist. The Smart #1, the first product of this joint venture, is a small SUV that aims to join the widening electric car market. Prices start from €37,479 for the Pro+ and rise to €54,170 for the Brabus version.

Design and Features

The Smart #1 SUV showcases a unique design that sets it apart from its competitors. It features a compact yet spacious body, measuring 168.1 inches in length and which is slightly taller than its rivals. With its triangular LED headlights, flush door handles, contrasting floating roof, and distinctive tail lights, the #1 exudes a modern EV aesthetic.

Inside the #1, you’ll find a well-thought-out interior with a tall floating centre console and numerous storage cubbies. The wing-like dashboard and oval-shaped details add a touch of elegance. The driver can access most information via either a slim 9.2-inch digital screen or a 10-inch head-up display. While the centre of the dash features a freestanding 12.8-inch touchscreen that incorporates an AI-based infotainment system with voice controls.

Despite its compact size, the #1 offers ample cargo space, making it practical for everyday use. The rear bench seat is adjustable, allowing passengers to slide and recline for optimal comfort. Additionally, the car is equipped with advanced driver-assist systems, such as adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, unlike the new Renault 5 EV, you don’t have the option of saving the drivers preferred settings.

Performance and Efficiency

Powered by Geely’s SEA electric architecture, the Smart #1 features a 66-kilowatt-hour battery pack and a single electric motor that drives the rear wheels. With 268 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque, the #1 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just under 6 seconds, with the Brabus version taking just 3.9s. Despite its weight of 1,819 kg, the #1 boasts impressive performance and agility.

The #1 can achieve a range of 440 kms on the European WLTP cycle, making it suitable for long journeys without frequent recharging. When using a DC fast charger, the #1 can charge from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes.

Manufacturing and Availability

The Smart #1 will be manufactured in China as part of the brand’s joint venture with Geely and are currently available in shortlisted Mercedes showrooms here in Ireland. While specific details about Smart’s future models don’t go beyond #3 yet (there may be a #4 & #5 on the way), the #1 provides a glimpse into the design and technology we can expect from future Smart models.
