VW launches ID.5 Coupé SUV| Industry News

It would be nice to see a company as big as VW take on Tesla in the extensive supercharging network stakes. In the meantime they’ve released their Model Y competitor, the ID.5. And as Coupé SUV’s are big sellers at the moment, VW are not to be out-done so now they’ve added the ID.5 to their ID range.

It comes with a 77kWh battery pack, the ID.4 only has the 52kWh option. There are a couple of different power ranges available starting at 174, 204 and 299 BHP. The lowest powered goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.4 seconds. The next in line gets more with 204 BHP and an increased sprint of 8.4 seconds. The GTX builds 295bhp from a motor on each axle and launches to 100 km/h in just 6.3 seconds. VW claims up to 500 kilometres of range on average except for the GTX which will have around 480 kilometres of range. The ID.5 has a max charging capacity of 135kW, with approx 450 kilometres of range added in half an hour.

Design changes include matrix LEDs and augmented-reality head-up display options, there’s an efficiency assistant that manages brake regeneration on the fly depending on your speed and what’s on the road ahead. VW says the ID.5 is sleek and smooth, with a drag co-efficient of 0.26. The sloping rear end has a small spoiler, while the rear LED lights have a 3D effect. The GTX version has its own DRL signature and slightly aggressive body kit. From the front you won’t see much of a visual difference from the ID.4, it’s all at the rear.

Standard equipment on the Style line includes three-zone air-con, comfort seats, 12.0-inch infotainment system, front and rear parking sensors with park assist plus, rear-view camera, keyless entry and start, a cabin brightening panoramic glass top and the matrix LED headlights.

Prices start at €61,295.00 and you can still claim up to €600 towards the purchase and installation of a home charger from the SEAI.

The boot has around 549 litres and is actually slightly bigger than the ID.4 until you lower the seats where the ID.5 has 1561 litres, the ID.4 has 1655 litres of space.
