Gilles Vidal joined the Renault group in 2020 as head of the Renault design studio and just look what he’s gone and done next. The Scenic Vision is a Hydrogen/Electric concept that would help widen the choice of energy sources for buyers.

The Renault Scenic Vision concept car, powered by a one-of-a-kind hybrid – electric and hydrogen – propulsion system, has a new-generation motor, a smaller battery and a fuel cell running on green hydrogen.

The Renault Scenic Vision’s 160 kW electrically excited synchronous motor is based on the Mégane E-Tech Electric’s motor. A 40 kWh battery (which is recyclable) is lighter, smaller and costs less than a battery for a similar electric vehicle. It also has a 15 kW fuel cell to recharge it during long journeys which helps extend the range. By 2030 if the network of hydrogen stations is more widely available, it would be possible to drive for 800 km before refueling. And best of all, the hydrogen tank would be able to be refilled in five minutes or less.

The engine is at the rear, so there is enough space for the 2.5 kg hydrogen tank at the front. And the fuel cell is under the floor, at the back of the platform, behind the battery. We can’t keep relying on one major source of energy, there has to be a widely available choice. Introducing an electric/hydrogen hybrid is a great addition to LPG and other alternatives.
