Opel’s new Crossland is a reasonably priced small SUV with heaps of space inside and a new look.

Special mention : Comfort, space, simplicity, new vizor face.

Needs work : Some in-cabin textures, even if they are hard wearing, could be nicer to touch.

On the outside it’s a similar size to Opel’s other suv the Mokka which is pitched as a traditional suv with striking looks and the option of four wheel drive.

The Crossland is front-wheel drive only and has the bigger boot and more rear legroom, it’s aimed very much for people with young children and an active lifestyle requiring plenty of space.

The long list of standard equipment includes alloy wheels, DAB radio, Apple Carplay/Android Auto and dual zone climate control.

Under the skin the Crossland is closely related to Peugeot’s 2008 and it uses the same engines which means a 1.2 litre petrol and 1.5 litre diesels.

Despite bidding to fill the space between MPV and SUV, the Crossland has laid on its individual style. It comes with a variety of trims as well as personalisation options to attune the car to your tastes. There’s only one bodystyle to choose from, but specs range from the basic (but well-equipped) SC, SRi and Elite.

All versions include a colour touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while top-spec models receive dual-zone climate control, front fog lights, auto lights, auto wipers and a host of extra safety kit.

Buyers can choose from two 1.2 litre petrol engines, as well as two diesels. As the Crossland is aimed mainly at retail customers, Opel expects the turbo petrol engines to sell well – although the diesels are still popular and selling. Entry-level cars use a five-speed manual gearbox, though the range-topping turbo petrol and high-output diesels use a six-speed. An auto option is also available for the most powerful petrol and diesel models.
