You don’t see a lot of them on the road, but you should. They’ve got character and an individual style that stands out in the small crossover segment. Fiat’s new front-wheel drive turbo petrol engine line-up in the 500X includes a three-cylinder 1.0-litre powerplant that delivers 120hp and 190Nm of torque and is paired with a six-speed manual transmission. Also available is a four-cylinder 1.3-litre engine with 150hp and 270Nm of torque.

It’s got a simple keyless system which can be operated by the button on the drivers door and also on the boot, which is really handy when you don’t have time to faff about. The UConnect system is simple to operate and the cabin in general is a good place for those who don’t like overly fussy technology. As simple to use as the instruments are, the one thing I kept accidentally doing was hitting the high beams when indicating.

The 500X is adept at handling city traffic with it’s light clutch and easy manual, it deftly maneuvers it’s way through city congestion. The 500x is perfect for short runs and weekly tasks as well as efficient for the daily commute.

With a Bluetooth hands-free interface, audio streaming, text reader and voice recognition function, Aux and USB ports with iPod integration and controls on the steering wheel, the infotainment is covered. There’s a bit of a reach from the drivers side to access the interface, but it works fluidly. You can also access further actions by downloading the Uconnect LIVE app and stream music via Deezer and TuneIn, access news from Reuters and improved navigation with TomTom. Eco:Drive and my:Car also allow you to monitor your driving style to improve the economy and running costs.

 

Standard equipment includes LED DRL and rear lights, 16″ alloy wheels, Techno-leather steering wheel, twin USB port, air con, Cruise Control, electric parking brake and 60/40 split rear seat. Traffic Sign Recognition and Intelligent Speed Assist, as well as Lane Assist system (which you can’t turn off, only minimise the extent of the warnings).

When you look at it next to the competition, the Fiat 500X (€24,995) has an individuality about it (Ateca – €25,995, Mokka €25,295 – T-Cross €22,495 and C4 Aircross – €24,405). It has more character than the Citroen and is cheaper than the Seat.
